Fediverse Review

Why SocialMedia is superfluous

Mastodon (+/-)
+ Great API (ratelimits to 300 postsminute), requires specific #pagination
+ Nice & #customizable userinterface
+ post #edit function
+ Account deletion are immediate …
0 500 charalimit
- but posts may very well stick around in othger instances as #cache .. You can’t delete them. #ever
- #ActivityPub is terrible at #synchronizing posts across #servers
- cannot lock account post from past ( #twitter , #bluesky can!)
- defederation is a wonky feature at best, mutes&blocks are as in other socialmedia
- broken waybackarchive for 420 instances
Verdict: Do not use.
(Don’t use #Bluesky, #Threads, #Twitter either)
( #Akkoma uses the same api structure, has emoji reacts and allows editing the post state after the fact)
=> Use Akkom instead, but mamny demerits still apply !

Writefreely
+ good interface + markdownedit
+ has rsscfeed and federates (with terribad #Activitypub
- instances die alot
Verdict:
Only use with many backups.
Blogplatforms preferred.
HTMLy f.e.

Pixlfed
+ good interface
+ Instagram import …
- .. But no way to move content from one instance to another…
Verdict:
Use sparingly, or selfhost

Code Complexity Scale

Instead of noting down the most complex coding problems I've encountered sofar,
I instead wrote another code to list them for me.
Currently this list is unordered, and I may include a lil "comment" (via more program code, what else ?).

The "complexity" number is chosen after a bit of deliberation (altho technically, if I encounter harder problems, I might have to reconsider ? especially if we scale /10).

Some will appear empty, for now. That might or might not change (Altho JS/PHP/Python are my main languages)

Smarthome, I Internet of things and data insecurity

Looks like that "cheap and nice smartphone addon" might have a severe issue packed in.

"Hey #honey .. I compromised our #local #network so we could live more comfy. Hope you are chill with that 🥰"

All devices you can buy that depend on •SmartLife •Brilliant •Tuya

Will most likely require auth'ing into the device with your router credencials AND will also have the inteusive app itself act as data syphon (try disabling network features, they will refuse to work without phoning home / a server connection)

Even the hardware itself is primed to this. And attempting to dissolve the shackles https://github.com/tuya-cloudcutter/cloudcutter-android requires a tuya developer account, linux and flashing a FW. Very userunfriendly.

Very concerning indeed

PHP Code Deprecation

So. I currently target PHP8 for all projects - it is the most to date one.

However, if I program something - no matter how adherent to nowadays standsarts - what are the odds it will stay functional?

I have seen projects written in php7, no longer functional.* Functions deprecated, Code needing to be rewritten.

So, if I write code today - can I be sure it will still run tomorrow ? (Counterargument: Javascript: Despite ongoing "softdeprecation" aka "please use the the newer feature, thanks", most code is still operational today, backwardscompatibility. Even in markuplanguage - html - frames are still around)

*Excluding the possibility of enforcing a specific version via htaccess. That is a last resort some government institutions who cant afford to pay programmers to update code take... Even some universities. Would you believe it.

The versions itself are supported for roughly 2 years: " Each release branch of PHP is fully supported fortwo years from its initial stable release " Source
